Qingfei Paidu Decoction is the first choice of Chinese medicine for clinical treatment in the "Diagnosis and Treatment Plan for New Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Seventh Edition)" published in early March. Since February 6, the National Health Commission and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine have jointly issued a document recommending the use of Qingfei Paidu Decoction nationwide.
Qingfei Paidu Decoction is derived from several classic recipes in Zhang Zhongjing's Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases. The whole recipe contains 21 herbal components. Its main functions are to clear away pathogens from the lungs, clear away heat and eliminate dampness, and strengthen the spleen and eliminate fluid. It is effective in improving symptoms such as fever, cough, and fatigue, and can effectively promote the improvement of lung imaging in critically ill patients.
Lung Cleansing and Detoxifying Decoction is derived from several classic recipes in a traditional Chinese medicine work known in English as Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, which was written by Zhang Zhongjing sometime before 220 AD. It has 21 herbal components and is mainly effective in improving symptoms of fever, cough and fatigue as well as lung condition, as shown by CT scans, in severe patients.
cleanse: to clean
detoxify: detoxify, remove toxins
decoction: decoction
Relevant basic research shows that this prescription can regulate multiple cytokine signaling pathways (cell signal pathway) - the transmission of information between cells, to achieve the purpose of inhibiting viral replication, thereby avoiding or alleviating the inflammatory storm (cytokine storm) - cytokines overreact to triggers such as viral infection, not distinguishing between friend and foe, causing damage to themselves. It focuses on the lungs and provides protection for multiple organs at the same time. It can be used as a general prescription for treating mild, ordinary, severe, and critical patients.
Studies have proved the decoction can regulate multiple cell signaling pathways – cells communicating with each other by receiving and processing chemical signals in response to environmental changes – to inhibit virus replication and avoid or mitigate cytokine storms, which are an overreaction of cells that damages the immune system.
The decoction targets lungs and can also protect other organs. It can be used as a general recipe for treating mild, moderate, severe and critical patients.
Tong Xiaolin, an expert of the Central Guidance Group, the leader of the expert group of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the chief researcher of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that so far, 1,261 patients with new coronary pneumonia in 10 provinces have been cured, 29 have disappeared, and 71 have improved. Among them, 28 of the 40 severe patients have been discharged after taking the decoction; 12 are being treated in the hospital, and 10 have improved their symptoms, "from severe to mild", and no mild case has turned into severe or critical illness.
Tong Xiaolin, chief researcher of the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said 1,261 novel coronavirus patients in 10 provinces took the decoction, with 1,102 recovering, symptoms no longer appearing in 29, a further 71 showing improvement and no cases deteriorating.
There were also 40 severe patients. After taking the medicine, 28 were discharged from hospital, and the condition of 10 improved, with their symptoms changing from severe to mild.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:
1. The medicine jar must be cleaned
When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.
In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.
2. Whether to cover the medicine
Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.
Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.
3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry
"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
