"Ben Cao Jing Shu" says: "Ziziphus jujuba seeds are sour and mild in nature, and the seeds are sweet. They are used to nourish the liver and gallbladder, and also to wake up the spleen. When cooked, they are fragrant, and the fragrance enters the spleen, so they can be used for the spleen. They can nourish the gallbladder, so they can warm the gallbladder. The qi of the mother and the child are connected, so they can also cure deficiency and restlessness, and insomnia. They cure cold and heat in the heart and abdomen, evil qi accumulation, and soreness, pain, and dampness in the limbs, all of which are caused by spleen deficiency and evil qi, because the spleen governs the limbs. The gallbladder is the head of all internal organs, and the eleven internal organs all depend on the gallbladder. The essence of the five internal organs is all inherited from the spleen, so taking it for a long time can calm the five internal organs.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: Although the nature of sour jujube is astringent, its smell is bland. It should be supplemented with other medicines to achieve its effect. For example, with angelica root and ginseng, it can astringe the heart; with angelica root and peony root, it can astringe the liver; with angelica root and shu root, it can astringe the spleen; with angelica root and wheat root, it can astringe the lungs; with angelica root and cypress root, it can astringe the kidneys; with angelica root and ling root, it can astringe the intestines, stomach, and bladder; with angelica root and astragalus root, it can astringe qi and irrigate the Ying and Wei; with angelica root and rehmannia root, it can astringe blood and nourish the true yin. Another ancient prescription is very effective in treating disharmony of gallbladder qi. If the gallbladder qi is empty, the heart is upset and can't sleep, stir-fry it.

"Bencao Huiyan" says: Ziziphus jujuba seeds can nourish the five internal organs. For example, if the heart qi is insufficient, there will be palpitations, loss of consciousness, or loose pores, spontaneous sweating and night sweats; if the lung qi is insufficient, there will be shortness of breath, timidity, and dry cough without sputum; if the liver qi is insufficient, there will be cramps in the tendons and bones, and dry and broken nails; if the kidney qi is insufficient, there will be spermatorrhea, nocturnal emission, and dribbling urination; if the spleen qi is insufficient, there will be a combination of cold and heat, and emaciated muscles; if the gallbladder qi is insufficient, there will be palpitations, fear, restlessness and insomnia. These are all diseases caused by the deficiency of the five internal organs, and the sour, sweet and warm nature of Ziziphus jujuba seeds can calm the blood and qi, and restrain and circulate them.

"Pharmaceutical Chemistry": Jujube seeds, the main function is to nourish, the skin is beneficial to the heart and blood, and its aroma is fried and fragrant, and it becomes slightly warm. The fragrance can penetrate the heart qi, and the warmth can help the mind. It must be used when the will hurts the blood, and the wisdom hurts the mind, causing the heart to be weak, the spirit to be lost, palpitations, trance, forgetfulness, sweating, thirst, etc. It is also used to warm the liver and gallbladder. If the gallbladder is deficient in blood and the heart is restless and insomnia, use this to make the liver and gallbladder blood sufficient, then the five internal organs are in harmony and sleep can be peaceful; if there is real heat in the gallbladder, it will sleep more, and it should be used raw to calm the qi. Because it tastes sweet and fragrant when fried, the aroma enters the spleen and can wake up the spleen yin. It can be used to treat those who are injured by worry and those who have chronic diarrhea.

"Ben Jing Feng Yuan" says: When cooked, the seeds of Ziziphus jujuba can astringe the semen, so it can treat symptoms of insomnia due to gallbladder deficiency, thirst and sweating; when raw, it can guide the deficiency heat, so it can treat symptoms of gallbladder heat, good sleep, coma and fatigue. Ziziphus jujuba is sour and astringent in nature, while its seeds are sweet, moist and warm in nature, which can disperse the stagnation of the liver and gallbladder meridians. Therefore, Ben Jing treats symptoms such as cold and heat in the heart and abdomen, accumulation of evil qi, soreness and blood stasis, etc., all of which are used raw to dredge the blood vessels of the liver and spleen. In fact, liver deficiency will damage the yin and cause restlessness, inability to store the soul, and insomnia. Cold-induced restlessness and sweating, as well as night sweats in people with deficiency, are all fried and used, in order to astringe the body fluids of the liver and spleen.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
