【Predecessors release medicine】

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: The spleen hates dampness. If dampness prevails, Qi cannot be transformed, and how can body fluid be produced? Therefore, it is said that the bladder is the place where body fluid is stored. When Qi is transformed, it can be discharged. If Atractylodes macrocephala is used to remove dampness, Qi can circulate and body fluid can be produced.

"Ben Cao Tong Xuan" says: Atractylodes macrocephala is a medicine for nourishing the spleen and stomach, and there is no better medicine than it. When the earth is strong, it can strengthen the movement, so those who cannot eat, those who have food stagnation, and those who have lumps and accumulation can all use it. When the earth is strong, it can overcome dampness, so those who suffer from phlegm and fluid, swelling, and dampness and arthritis all rely on it. When the earth is strong, the clear air is good at rising, and the essence is sent up, the turbid air is good at descending, and the dregs are sent down, so those who vomit and diarrhea cannot be missing it. "Bie Lu" believes that it is beneficial to the blood between the waist and navel, because the spleen and stomach control the blood of the whole body, and the waist and navel are its divisions. With its nourishing function, blood stasis dare not stay. Zhang Yuansu said that it produces body fluid and quenches thirst, and the dampness is gone and the qi can circulate, and body fluid is produced. It is said that it can eliminate phlegm, because there is no dampness in the spleen, phlegm will not be produced. It is also used to calm the fetus, and it removes heat in the stomach.

"Ben Cao Chong Yuan" says: "If you want to nourish the spleen, use Atractylodes macrocephala. If you want to move the spleen, use Atractylodes macrocephala. If you want to nourish and move both, use both. If you nourish more and move less, use more Atractylodes macrocephala and less Atractylodes macrocephala. If you move more and nourish less, use more Atractylodes macrocephala and less Atractylodes macrocephala. Although there are two types, they are actually the same. "Ben Cao" does not distinguish between Atractylodes macrocephala and Bai, but Zhong Zu's "Shang Han" prescriptions all use Atractylodes macrocephala. In the "Jingui" prescriptions, red Atractylodes macrocephala is used. In Tao Hongjing's "Bie Lu", it is divided into two. It should be noted that the distinction between red and white began with Zhong Zu, not Hongjing. Red Atractylodes macrocephala is Atractylodes macrocephala, and its function is similar to that of Atractylodes macrocephala, so the main treatment of Atractylodes macrocephala in "Ben Cao" is still the basis. However, Atractylodes macrocephala tastes sweet, while Atractylodes macrocephala is bitter. Atractylodes macrocephala stops sweating, while Atractylodes macrocephala causes sweating, so the words "stop sweating" are omitted. Later generations said that Atractylodes macrocephala tastes bitter, but in fact, Atractylodes macrocephala tastes sweet and slightly bitter.

"Ben Jing Feng Yuan" says: Atractylodes macrocephala, when used raw, can remove dampness and replenish dryness, eliminate phlegm and promote diuresis, treat wind-cold and dampness arthritis, dead muscles, spasm and jaundice, disperse blood between the waist and navel, and treat Chong meridian diseases, and the effects of reverse qi and urgency; when cooked, it can harmonize the middle and replenish qi, quench thirst, produce body fluid, stop sweating and eliminate heat, promote appetite, and stabilize the fetus.

"Changsha Yaojie": Atractylodes macrocephala is quite stagnant in nature, so it should be supplemented with products that can disperse and promote qi. If the lungs and stomach are blocked, add ginger and Pinellia ternata to expel turbidity. If the liver and spleen are blocked, add Amomum villosum and cinnamon twig to relieve depression. Let it nourish and promote the flow of qi, then it will be good without any harm.

"Medical Records of Chinese and Western Medicine": Atractylodes macrocephala is warm and dry in nature, has no fragrant smell, tastes bitter, slightly sweet and slightly spicy, is good at strengthening the spleen and stomach, eliminating phlegm and water, stopping diarrhea, treating bloating caused by spleen deficiency, thirst caused by spleen dampness, weakness of the limbs, and even pain. When used with cooling and moistening drugs, it is also good at nourishing the lungs; when used with ascending and dispersing drugs, it is also good at regulating the liver; when used with calming drugs, it is also good at nourishing the heart; when used with yin-nourishing drugs, it is also good at nourishing the kidneys. Because it has all the virtues of the earth, it is an essential medicine for acquired life, so it can benefit the four internal organs of gold, wood, water, and fire.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
