【Predecessors release medicine】

"Compendium of Materia Medica": Ophiopogon japonicus is a medicine for clearing the heart and moistening the lungs. It is used to treat insufficient heart qi, palpitations, forgetfulness, and mental loss; or lung heat and dryness, continuous coughing, pulmonary tuberculosis, shortness of breath, and wheezing, fire in the lungs, hemoptysis, and hemoptysis; or asthenia and guest heat, dryness of body fluids; or dryness of the spleen and stomach, constipation, and constipation; these are all symptoms of fire depression in the heart, lungs, kidneys, and spleen essence. However, it tastes sweet and has a flat qi, which can benefit the lung metal, tastes bitter and is cold in nature, which can reduce heart fire, moisten the body, and nourish the kidney marrow. It is mostly used to treat fatigue and deficiency heat. For example, the ancients used it to treat qi stagnation in the heart and abdomen, injury to the middle and fullness, gastric collaterals, emaciation, and shortness of breath, which are clearly caused by fatigue.

"Pharmaceutical Chemistry": Ophiopogon japonicus moistens and clears the lungs. The bitter air in the lungs goes up against the flow. Moistening and clearing it can protect the lung qi. If you have a cough, fever, thirst, or foot paralysis, they are all due to lung heat, and they will all be cured. Together with Rehmannia glutinosa, it can clear the heart and lungs, so that the qi will flow smoothly and the qi will be released. It is suitable for treating weak people with poor vital energy, chest and abdominal qi fullness, and women with dry menstruation and milk retention. Together with Scutellaria baicalensis, it can support metal and control wood, and treat swelling and edema. Together with Gardenia jaundice, it can clear metal and promote water, and treat jaundice. Together with Small Lotus Coin, it can clear and nourish the gallbladder to assist Shaoyang in invigorating the body. It is added to Guben Pills to nourish Yin and blood, so that the heart fire descends and the kidney water rises, which means that the heart and kidney interact.

"New Compendium of Materia Medica": Ophiopogon japonicus can relieve the hidden fire in the lungs, clear the heat evil in the stomach, replenish the fatigue of the heart qi, stop vomiting in hemorrhage, strengthen the essence and yin, relieve restlessness and thirst, beautify the complexion, please the skin, reduce deficiency heat, relieve lung dryness, and stop coughing. It can really be used as the king and can also be used as the minister. However, people in the world do not know the wonderful use of Ophiopogon japonicus, and often use it sparingly and fail to succeed. It is a pity. I don't know that Ophiopogon japonicus must be used more to be powerful. The fire is hidden in the lungs, drying up the internal fluid. If you don't use too much Ophiopogon japonicus, the fire cannot be controlled; the heat is burning in the stomach, boiling up its yin. If you don't use too much Ophiopogon japonicus, the fire cannot be extinguished. There is also the fire of the bladder, which goes up against the heart and chest, and the urine cannot come out. People think that the urine is blocked by fire because of the heat of the bladder. The medicine for clearing water is ineffective, and the medicine for reducing fire is ineffective. What's the use of this? The qi of the bladder must be cleared and cleared by the upper jiao, so the fire will descend and the water will flow down. The order of clearing and purging the upper burner is inherited from the lungs. If the lung qi is hot, the order of clearing and purging the lungs will not work, and the fire of the bladder will be blocked, and the water will also be blocked. Therefore, if you want to clear the bladder, you must clear the qi of the lung metal. There are many medicines for clearing the lungs, but they are all harmful and not beneficial. They are not as good as Ophiopogon japonicus, which is both clearing and tonifying, and can purge the fire of the bladder without damaging the qi of the bladder. However, if you use it in small quantities, it will not be successful. This is because Ophiopogon japonicus has a neutral and cold taste, so it must be used in large quantities to be effective.

"Ben Jing Shu Zheng" says: Ophiopogon japonicus tastes sweet with bitterness, and it is also wonderful that it goes from the stomach to the heart. Therefore, the stomach can transport essence upwards with it, and the lungs can spread it to the four internal organs and the five bowels. The stagnant qi will melt away, and the veins will be connected. Food and drink can become skin, and the spirit of the valley will be strong and the qi will be filled accordingly. Xiangyan Ye said that knowing hunger but not being able to eat is due to the damage of stomach yin. Taiyin wet earth starts to move when it gets yang, and Yangming dry earth is at peace when it gets yin. The prescription for benefiting stomach yin is in line with the meaning of Zhongjing's sweet medicine to regulate it. "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" and "Golden Chamber" use Ophiopogon japonicus in five prescriptions, but only the Dioscorea Pills have many ingredients, so its efficacy cannot be seen. In Zhigancao Decoction, it can be seen that the yin is deficient in the yang, and the pulse is weeping and astringent; in Zhuye Shigao Decoction, it can be seen that the stomach fire is still strong and the spirit of the valley is not strong; in Ophiopogon Decoction, it can be seen that the qi is reversed due to fire; in Wenjing Decoction, it can be seen that the solidity of the lower jiao leads to the deficiency of the upper jiao. Although, if the lower burner is solid, it cannot be used unless there is hot palms and dry lips and mouth; if the upward qi is caused by wind or phlegm, not fire, and the throat is loose, it cannot be used; if the person is weak and has little qi, does not have qi reversal and wants to vomit, but has diarrhea, it cannot be used; if the pulse is not knotted and intermittent, but weak and about to stop, it cannot be used. The function of Ophiopogon japonicus is to lift the Yin essence of the stomach, moisten the heart and lungs, unblock the meridians, and lower the reverse qi to eliminate the heat and irritability. If it is not a symptom of the upper burner, it is definitely not suitable for it.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: Ophiopogon japonicus is sweet and has a rich cream, so it is specially used to nourish stomach yin and body fluids. It is a top-grade sweet medicine. For those with excessive stomach fire, gradual drying of yin fluids, and yin damage caused by fever, weakness after illness, and no recovery of body fluids, or dryness caused by summer heat, shortness of breath and fatigue, autumn dryness, and depletion of lung and stomach fluids, Ophiopogon japonicus is a must-use medicine because it is cold and moist, replenishes yin and quenches thirst. However, if the yin is cold, it is most appropriate for those with hot and dry fluids, while those with spleen and stomach deficiency and coldness and weak clear yang cannot be helped to grow and develop by yin and soft products. Moreover, if the cream is thick and greasy, if the spleen is not functioning well, it will hinder its transfer and excess, and dampness will block phlegm and cold fluid will stagnate, which is beyond the scope of this article. The main treatments of "Ben Jing" and "Bie Lu" are mostly based on nourishing the stomach. We must understand this purpose in order to understand the pros and cons. Otherwise, people will insist on the theory of "satisfaction, fullness, heaviness, yellow eyes", and throw all of them randomly, thinking that this is also the essence of the ancients. Isn't it more difficult? "Bielu" also said that Ophiopogon japonicus is the main medicine for paralysis, which is exactly the meaning of "Inner Canon" to treat paralysis. The stomach governs muscles, and the Yangming meridian is from the foot to the top. If the Yangming meridian is hot, the meridian will be relaxed and not contracted. If the gastric fluid is dry, the collaterals will lose moisture and be unfavorable. Supplementing the stomach's fluid and nourishing the Yangming fluid are the basis for treating paralysis. However, there are also cases where dampness flows into the joints and the foot is useless. In this case, it is advisable to regulate the dampness first. It is also opposite to the method of nourishing and moisturizing. If you don't know how to distinguish, the mistake is even greater. "Bielu" also said that it stabilizes the lung qi, and later people used Ophiopogon japonicus as the main medicine for nourishing the lungs. Because there is fire in the lungs, nourishing the stomach's yin to produce lung metal is also the right method. Shenmai San is indeed a supreme product for nourishing the stomach and protecting the lungs. However, the lung is a container for phlegm, which is less dry and more turbid. If the phlegm is not cleared and sticky medicine is used, the harm is beyond description. Ophiopogon japonicus is the best in the nourishing and greasy team. If it is supplemented with soft, moist, sweet and cold herbs such as Adenophora Root, Polygonatum odoratum, and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, it will not be able to move and become a cave. The clean lung metal will then become a source of phlegm and fluid. Ophiopogon japonicus was originally a special product for replenishing stomach fluid, but nowadays many people think it is a medicine for replenishing the lung. Although it is said that replenishing the earth produces metal, it is not absurd. The reason why it is special is that it is in the stomach and not in the lung. Kou Zongshi said that it can treat lung heat, which is also referring to those with fire in the lungs. It is also acceptable to moisten and nourish the fluid to treat lung heat and leaf scorch. "Rihua" said that it can treat lung atrophy, which is also referring to those with blazing lung fire. However, it is also said to vomit pus, which is lung abscess. In fact, pulmonary emphysema and lung abscess are one deficiency and one excess. The deficiency is dry emphysema, while the excess is phlegm-fire. Ophiopogon japonicus is moist and greasy, and can treat emphysema caused by dry fire, but cannot treat abscess caused by phlegm. Moreover, pulmonary abscess is caused by the combination of turbid phlegm and qi-fire, and the coughing and vomiting are foul-smelling, or there is a lot of pus and blood. It should be cleared and lowered, and it is absolutely unreasonable to use nourishing and greasy herbs. Even if the treatment is carried out in accordance with the method, the fire is extinguished and the phlegm is cleared, and the coughing and vomiting are greatly reduced, the lung qi has already shown signs of weakness, and it is still necessary to treat it with clearing and moistening herbs. If it is mistakenly supplemented with greasy herbs, the phlegm and cough will be severe, and the remaining flame will be re-expanded. This is also a clear evidence since clinical practice. Pulmonary emphysema is a disease caused by lung heat and scorched leaves. If we only talk about the theory and method, it must be the priority to nourish the lung. However, qi deficiency will cause cough, and cough will force the fire to rise, and the liquid of water and grain in the stomach will also turn into turbid phlegm. Therefore, although the lungs are emaciated, they will still cough and spit frequently, but what is vomited is mostly saliva and not turbid purulent phlegm. Therefore, it is only necessary to clear and nourish the lung qi and gradually regulate the fire of the molten gold. If you only know that it is a deficiency and give sticky and nourishing medicine, the deficiency may not be benefited, and the phlegm and fire will have a place to rely on, and the cough will become more and more severe, and it will inevitably stop ringing and cannot be saved. This is the big taboo of Adenophora, Polygonatum, Ophiopogon, Anemarrhena, etc., not only for purulent phlegm lung abscess, but also for pulmonary emaciated with deficiency phlegm. "Rihua" also said that Ophiopogon can treat five kinds of fatigue and seven kinds of injuries, which is also the meaning of "Benjing" to treat injuries. It nourishes the stomach and nourishes yin, produces body fluid and benefits blood. What is not the correct treatment for harmonizing the five internal organs? However, it is OK to take food to nourish before the disease occurs. If it is said that fatigue and injury have already occurred, and it is treated with yin and soft medicine, it is not the purpose of Yang giving birth to Yin. Moreover, although the disease of overwork is called internal heat, it is also due to deficiency of yin and lack of yang. To tonify the spleen's qi and help it to function properly can still hit the core, and both the beginning and the end will work. If you only nourish yin, the yin and cold will take over, and the spleen yang will be defeated. Symptoms such as loss of appetite and diarrhea cannot be treated. The so-called incurable diseases caused by the yin and soft medicines are all caused by them.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
