【Predecessors release medicine】

"Ben Cao Jing Shu" says: "Peppermint is more pungent than bitter but non-toxic. Pungent is associated with the lungs, and the lungs are associated with the skin and fur. Bitter is associated with the heart and is transformed by fire. It governs the blood vessels and heat, and is a yang organ. The evil of cold caused by the evil wind is on the surface, so sweating can relieve it. Wind-clearing medicines are ascending in nature, and they are also pungent and warm, so they can disperse evil and ward off evil. Pungent and fragrant can open the orifices, so they can treat abdominal distension and cholera. "Dietary Therapy" cites it as being able to remove heat from the heart, so it is an important medicine for children's convulsions and wind-heat. Pungent and fragrant can disperse and open the joints, so those who expel the evil wind and sweat, the wind is relieved by sweating. It is not a spleen and stomach medicine, so how can it control the nature of the upward movement of food that cannot be digested? It is also difficult to cure. It is mainly used to lower Qi. Fatigue is caused by weakness, which cannot be relieved by dispersing. All three treatments are wrong. Those who know it should distinguish it. Also: Do not take it if the patient has just recovered, because sweating will weaken the Qi of the surface. Do not take it if the cough is caused by lung deficiency and cold invasion without fever, because it will be cured by tonic. Do not take it if the person has Yin deficiency and fever, because sweating will drain the body fluid. Do not take it if the person has beriberi and other typhoid fever, because the disease is mainly caused by lowering and belongs to the spleen. Headache caused by blood deficiency is not suitable for blood tonic. Do not take it if the child has fever due to food poisoning, and do not take it if the child has fever due to malnutrition. If the child has smallpox and is diagnosed with Qi deficiency, even if the fever has just started, do not take it. "

"Pharmaceutical Chemistry" says: "Peppermint is pungent and dispersing, cool and clear in nature, and can clear the six yang meridians and dispel wind evils of various heats. It is sharp and light in nature, and is good at moving on the head and face. It is used to treat aphonia, heal the mouth and teeth, and clear the throat. It can reach the top of the head with Chuanxiong to guide the stagnant heat. It is fragrant and can open the orifices. It is good at moving on the surface of the muscles. It can eliminate edema, disperse muscle heat, eliminate back pain, and lead the surface medicine into the Ying and Wei to relieve stagnant qi."

"New Compendium of Materia Medica": "Mint is not only good at relieving wind evil, but also good at relieving depression. Using Cyperus rotundus to relieve depression is not as effective as using mint to relieve depression. Mint enters the liver and gallbladder meridians, is good at relieving half-exterior and half-interior evil, and is lighter and clearer than Bupleurum."

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: "Mint has a pungent and cool smell and is good for the liver and lungs. Therefore, it is recorded in books that it is pungent and can disperse, and is suitable for headaches, head wind, fever and chills; it is pungent and can relieve air, and is suitable for treating bad air and phlegm in the heart and abdomen; it is cool and can clear away heat, and is good for the throat, mouth, teeth, eyes, ears, urticaria, scabies, convulsions, bone steaming, and nosebleeds. Therefore, the ancient prescription Xiaoyao uses it as a tool to relieve depression and disperse qi; it is used to treat epilepsy in children as a way to dispel wind and guide; it is used as a method to relieve qi and clear the intestines for bloody diarrhea. However, I dare not use too much, and only use two or three parts, for fear that it will drain the true essence."

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
