【Predecessors release medicine】

"Compendium of Materia Medica": Calamus has a warm nature and can be used for those with insufficient heart qi. If the heart qi is weak, it can replenish its mother. If the liver is bitter and urgent, it can be replenished with pungent herbs.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" says: Acorus calamus can benefit qi and open the orifices. If the qi is not smooth and the orifices are blocked due to phlegm and fire, it is appropriate to take it. If the qi in the middle is insufficient, the spirit is discouraged, and the qi orifices are blocked due to lack of yang qi, Shiquan Dabu Decoction is often used, which is very effective. There is no need to ask about Acorus calamus.

"New Compendium of Materia Medica": Acorus calamus must be grown on stone, otherwise it will be useless. However, it can only be used as an adjuvant, not as the main drug. To open the heart, it must be ginseng as an adjuvant; to ventilate, it must be Atractylodes macrocephala as the main drug; to stop enuresis, it will not be effective without ginseng and Astragalus; to calm fetal movement, it will not be successful without adding more Atractylodes macrocephala; to eliminate depression and treat forgetfulness, it will not be effective without ginseng as the main drug.

"Ben Jing Feng Yuan" says: Acorus calamus is suitable for those with insufficient heart qi. "Ben Jing" says that the heart is the monarch of the five internal organs, and the five internal organs are connected. First, it is used to treat wind-cold dampness and arthralgia, which is to take its pungent and warm power to develop spleen qi. For cough and reverse breathing, it is the wheezing cough caused by phlegm and dampness, so it is suitable to search and clear. If the wheezing cough caused by lung and stomach deficiency and dryness is not treated by Acorus calamus. It opens the heart orifice, opens the nine orifices, and brightens the ears and eyes. It can make sounds, and it is generally used for its pungent and warm power to open the orifices. It is also used to treat liver deficiency, heart and abdominal pain, cholera cramps, and epilepsy. It is good at opening the heart and spleen phlegm and dampness. It is forbidden for those with hyperactivity of yang and deficiency of yin. Because of its warm nature, it is good at invigorating the fire of the pericardium, which is not different from the help of Polygala tenuifolia in the fire of the phase. From the "Ben Jing" that it stops small urination, its power to help yang can be seen.

Chongqing Hall Essays: Acorus calamus is a wonderful medicine that can soothe the mind, relieve the spirit, soothe the mood, and benefit the mind. It is used as a purifying medicine to remove the turbidity of phlegm and protect the palace, and it is used as a nourishing medicine to relieve the knots in the mind and communicate with the spirit.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: Acorus calamus is pungent and warm in nature, so it is used to treat the numbness caused by wind, cold and dampness. It is used to treat cough, reverse breathing, and suffocation of the diaphragm caused by cold and damp phlegm. It is pungent and can open and release, and warmness can overcome dampness and coldness. All those with phlegm and fluid accumulation, dampness and turbidity, chest obstruction and qi stagnation, and thick and greasy tongue coating, cannot be unblocked without this fragrant and clearing aroma. It is not comparable to the cough, reverse breathing caused by dry cough of the lungs and stomach and kidney deficiency. It is used to open the heart orifices and nourish the five internal organs, which is also used to refer to the obstruction of phlegm and turbidity; it is used to cleanse the evil and filth, so that the nine orifices are spiritual, and the internal organs are naturally nourished. It is not a warm and dry thing, but it can nourish the true yin of the five internal organs. However, the popular saying that Acorus calamus can open the heart orifices and guide the phlegm and saliva directly into the pericardium is like opening the door to welcome thieves, which is wrong. Moreover, the clear and fragrant aroma can help people refresh their spirits, so it makes the ears and eyes smart and the nine orifices are smooth. When cold phlegm blocks the lung qi, people will become mute. Acorus calamus can expel phlegm and open the orifices, and the voice will open up naturally. It is obviously different from the muteness of the weak and exhausted Jinpo. The meaning of the following twelve words is different from the above text. The Daguan version is not in the plain text. I am afraid that it was inserted by later generations. I will leave it here for now. The saying that it only treats small urination refers to the symptoms of the sinking of clear qi and the lack of power to collect it. The pungent and warm herbs can raise the sinking qi, which may be able to cure it. "Bie Lu" treats dampness and arthralgia of the limbs that cannot be flexed or extended, which is the same as the treatment of wind, cold and dampness in "Ben Jing". It is redundant and redundant. Warm malaria is also the evil qi that runs in season, and it is also covered by damp phlegm. Acorus calamus can remove phlegm and eliminate filth, and help the positive qi, so it can cure it. However, the deficiency and excess, cold and heat of malaria are different. It seems too general to focus on children. Moreover, it is also a bathing soup for external treatment, which is also ineffective. This entry in "Bie Lu" is not the essence, which is very suspicious. Maybe it was modified by later generations? Zhen Quan treated tinnitus, which was caused by damp phlegm covering the clear qi, and the qi of Jiamu Shaoyang, which was depressed and not stretched, and the effect of opening the nine orifices was that if the liver and kidney yin were deficient and the floating yang disturbed the tinnitus, it would not be suitable for pungent and warm to open the orifices. Zhen Quan also treated headaches and tears, which was also suitable only for those with cold wind binding outside. If the headache was caused by liver yang disturbing itself, it could not be treated in the same way. Zhen Shi also said that it was used to treat ghost qi, and Binhu said that it was used to treat sudden death due to evil in the middle and guest pestle, which were all dark and unhealthy qi, and they were the correct treatments of aromatic and warding off filth. "Da Ming" said that it could eliminate depression, stop heart and stomach pain, and cholera cramps, all of which referred to the interaction of cold and dampness and the submergence of true yang. Acorus calamus, with its aromatic and cold positive qi, could overcome evil and promote qi and relieve pain. The prescriptions of Huoxiang Zhengqi and other prescriptions of later generations, as well as the pills and powders for epidemic symptoms such as Naoshe, were all examples of this. However, although calamus is warm and can ward off evil, it is still not enough to warm the middle. It can directly attack the three Yin meridians and cause symptoms such as severe pain, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, cold sweats, weak pulse and blue complexion. It is not something that this herb can do alone.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
