【Predecessors release medicine】

"Ben Cao Jing Shu" says: "If you look at the herbs of various schools, you will know that the nature of the herb is mellow and mild, so it can be used for a long time and has endless uses. Just as this medicine can nourish the five internal organs and nourish the qi and blood, the root cause is cured and the remaining diseases are eliminated. Blood is yin and is responsible for maintaining the complexion, while qi is yang and is responsible for lightening the body. If the yin essence is insufficient, it will cause false heat; if the kidney qi is not solid, it will cause bone atrophy and waist and leg pain; if the deficiency is accompanied by fire, it will cause headaches and restlessness, eye pain and tears; if the deficiency is accompanied by heat congestion, it will cause depression and thirst; if the upper part is full and the lower part is empty, it will cause coldness in the penis, and even five kinds of fatigue and seven kinds of injuries, and the essence will dry up day by day, and it will become a symptom of deficiency. If one medicine can be used for many purposes and is effective, how can it be so if it is not to nourish the yin essence and increase the yang qi? Judging from its strengths, it is probably similar to Huangjing. It is used to treat wind-induced fever, inability to move, sprained tendons, muscle atrophy, dampness and toxins, etc., all of which are used to treat female impotence, because the two substances are mixed into one in "Ben Jing".

"New Compendium of Materia Medica": The nature of the herb is pure, and its effect is very slow. It cannot save the emergency for a while, and it must be taken more often to be effective. It is difficult to expect a quick effect when using it in decoctions. Moreover, the herb can replenish yin, and ginseng must replenish yang, so that yin and yang can be balanced, and the effect is really amazing. Therefore, for stroke, taking herb and ginseng together will not cause paralysis; for shock and mania, taking herb and ginseng together will reduce the pain of death. Ginseng is strengthened by the herb, and the herb is encouraged by ginseng.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: "Wei Rui is a warm, moist, sweet and mild product. If you make pills with honey and take several kilograms of it, it will have special effects. It is the same as taking Polygonum multiflorum and Rehmannia glutinosa. If you only add a few grams to the decoction and think it can replace ginseng and Astragalus, you are far from the truth. Generally speaking, this medicine has a slow nature and can only be effective after taking it for a long time. It is mainly used for the slow symptoms of rheumatism and asthenia. Therefore, Lu Xian took it for oral use, and Nanyang used it to treat wind-heat. "Qianjin" and "Wai Tai" also used it occasionally, but never relied on it as a heavy dose. If the symptoms of acute deficiency are caused by ginseng and Astragalus, ginseng and Astragalus must be used to restore the pulse and yang. At this time, even if you use a few kilograms of Wei Rui, it cannot match the few grams of ginseng and Astragalus. (If) because Li Shizhen said that it can replace ginseng and Astragalus, you always add it when you encounter deficiency symptoms, how can it benefit the patient?

"Ben Cao Bian Du" says: "The herb is moist and nourishing, and it is good at nourishing the yin of the lung and spleen. However, it seems that it is not effective for the treatment of wind-dispersing and heat-dissipating diseases that are moist and sweet. It can also be used for those with wind-heat and wind-warm, which are due to deficiency. The nature, flavor and function of Polygonatum odoratum are similar to those of Polygonatum odoratum, and it can be inferred that wind-warm and wind-heat syndromes are most likely to damage the yin, and drugs that nourish the yin are also easy to hinder the evil. Only Polygonatum odoratum is sweet, mild and nourishing, and although it nourishes, it does not hinder the evil. Therefore, the ancients took this into consideration when formulating prescriptions.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" says: Polygonatum odoratum is sweet, fatty, and soft. Although "Compendium of Materia Medica" does not mention its coldness, it treats all diseases of dryness and heat, so how cold is it (can be known). The ancients used it to treat wind-heat, because it is soft and moist and can calm the wind. It is a yin-cold substance and cannot treat external wind evil. It is most suitable for diseases caused by burning heat evil and wind caused by strong fire. Now it is only used to treat dryness and heat in the lungs and stomach, dryness of body fluids, thirst and dry throat, and it is especially effective for those with strong stomach fire, dry thirst and hunger, and those who eat a lot and get hungry easily. "Qianjin" and Zhu Gong believe that it is the main medicine for treating wind-heat, because wind diseases are caused by internal heat steaming, and wind is generated by heat. It is not an external infection, but the heat is the strongest and the body fluids are easily damaged, so Polygonatum odoratum is used as the main medicine. Zhen Quan said that if you have a restless head, add this thing, which also refers to the headache caused by rampant liver fire and wind-yang disturbance. It is sweet, cold, soft and moist, which is the wonderful effect of calming wind and clearing fire. How can it be said that it can cure all headaches? The three words "Zhu Bu Su" in Bencao Jing summarize the above sentences about violent heat. Yin'an's words are very true. But the ancients mistakenly thought that it refers to all kinds of deficiency. Therefore, Zhen Quan said that it replenishes the deficiency; Xiao Bing said that it replenishes the middle and replenishes the qi; Rihua said that it replenishes the deficiency of the five labors and seven injuries; Binhu said that it treats spleen and stomach deficiency, frequent urination and loss of semen in men, and all kinds of deficiency. He also said that it can treat deficiency, cold and heat, and all kinds of deficiency symptoms, and use ginseng and astragalus, which are neither cold nor dry, and have great effects. It is almost regarded as a magic medicine for resurrecting the dead. I don't know that the nature of softness and moistness, pure yin, is enough to kill the opportunity of life. What's more, the disease of deficiency and fatigue is the deficiency of both yin and yang. Even if the deficiency fire is raging, there is no way to directly analyze it with cold and cool. How can it be a yin, cold, greasy and stagnant quality, and replenish the middle and replenish qi? The opinions of various scholars are all due to the fault of misreading the three words "Zhu Bu Su" in Bencao Jing.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
