【Predecessors release medicine】

"Pharmaceutical Chemistry": "Winter flower, bitter in taste, mainly descends, fragrant in aroma, mainly disperses, one thing has two uses. Therefore, it is used in the lungs, smoothes the air in the lungs, and clears the blood in the lungs. It is specially used to treat cough, shortness of breath, irritability, heat, thick and sticky phlegm, and fishy sputum. It is an essential medicine for various symptoms, such as chronic cough and lung deficiency.

"Compendium of Materia Medica Chengya Banjie" says: "The flower of Kuandong is used to treat cough, shortness of breath, and throat paralysis. It is suitable for those who suffer from dryness of the kidney, cold body and cold drinks, and are injured by dampness in autumn. If the fire is hot and the metal is injured, or the lung qi is scorched and full, it may further deplete and damage the body."

"Ben Jing Shu Zheng" says: "Aster and coltsfoot are not used in other places of Zhongjing's book, but they are used in Shegan Mahuang Decoction in the chapter of cough due to pulmonary tuberculosis. Shegan Mahuang Decoction is Xiaoqinglong Decoction without cinnamon twig, peony root and licorice root, and with Shegan, Aster, coltsfoot and jujube. Although Aster and coltsfoot are not the main ingredients of this prescription, the change of local method is actually due to Aster and coltsfoot. Therefore, "Qianjin" and "Wai Tai" all use Aster to treat cough and long-term cough. Aster and Kuantong are used in nine out of ten prescriptions, so this prescription of yours must also be an important medicine. However, the two ingredients, one is to open the knot and make the yin of the middle burner turn into blood, and the other is to absorb the yin and return to the lower part. In fact, their functions are similar, but their differences can be roughly seen in "Qianjin" and "Wai Tai". For those who vomit pus and blood and lose their voice, and those who have excessive wind, cold and water qi, most people do not use Kuantong, but use Aster. Kuantong is often used with warming and tonic drugs, which misses its main purpose. "

"Ben Cao Zheng Yi" says: "Huangdong Hua is the main lung disease, can relieve depression, stop asthma, and specialize in cough. Its nature and function are very similar to those of Aster. Therefore, the main treatments of "Ben Jing" are also the same. It is most suitable for asthma and cough caused by cold binding of lung metal. However, although the smell is warm, moist but not dry, it can also treat warm and hot evils that are depressed in the lung meridian and cannot be relieved. For example, Aster opens the lungs and is suitable for both cold and heat. Compared with Aster, it is pungent and warm, so if the evil fire is depressed, such as lung abscesses, pus, and red and smelly phlegm, it should be avoided. Zhen Quan said that it is the main lung atrophy and lung abscess, and Jingyue and Shi Wan followed it, which is not appropriate. Moreover, Shi Wan also said that it is taboo for yin deficiency and fatigue cough, because it is warm in nature. Why is it not afraid of its warmth for lung abscesses? In short, its general function is similar to Aster."

"New Compendium of Materia Medica": Coltsfoot flower is pungent, sweet and warm, yang, and non-toxic. It is good at stopping lung cough, eliminating thick and sticky phlegm and saliva, moistening the lungs, purging evil fire, calming asthma, calming the heart, removing evil heat, eliminating irritability, calming the liver and improving eyesight. Burning the smoke and inhaling it is also good at stopping cough, especially lung cough and liver cough. It is incomprehensible that people like to use Aster but not Coltsfoot. Although Aster also stops chronic cough, it tastes bitter and hurts the stomach. It is not as sweet as Coltsfoot, which is clear and nourishing. That is why I choose Coltsfoot and discard Aster.

"Ben Cao Jing Jie": It is warm in nature. It is pungent in taste. It is non-toxic. It cures cough, reverse breathing, wheezing, throat numbness, various convulsions, epilepsy, cold and heat evil qi. The temperature of coltsfoot is warm. It is endowed with the wood qi of spring and harmony. It enters the liver meridian of foot jueyin. It is pungent in taste and non-toxic. It is endowed with the moist gold taste of the west. It enters the lung meridian of hand taiyin. The qi and qi both rise. It is yang. Lung metal controls qi. If qi is reversed, fire will take over metal. Then cough, reverse breathing, wheezing and so on will occur. The cure is that the pungent taste moistens the lung. The temperature is unblocked. Then the descending order of lung metal will be carried out and various symptoms will be relieved. Throat numbness is caused by fire accumulating in the throat and blocking it. The throat also belongs to the lung. Coltsfoot is pungent and warm and unblocks the lung. Therefore, it cures throat numbness. Various convulsions, epilepsy, cold and heat evil qi. There are differences between deficiency and excess in convulsions. There are differences between epilepsy and the five internal organs. They are different. Therefore, evil qi also has differences between cold and heat. The cure is that Although the pathogens are different in cold and heat, they are all symptoms of liver wood qi reversal and fire inflammation in the Jueyin meridian. Kuandong is pungent and warm. The warmth can reach the liver. The pungentness can lower the qi. When the qi is lowered and the fire is calmed, the pathogenic qi will retreat.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
