Cheng Wuji: The root of Trichosanthes kirilowii moistens the dryness. Adding it can make the body fluids flow, which is suitable for thirst. When the body fluids are insufficient, thirst will occur, and bitterness can strengthen it. The bitterness of the root of Trichosanthes kirilowii can produce body fluids.

"Compendium of Materia Medica": The root of Trichosanthes kirilowii tastes sweet, slightly bitter and sour. Sourness can produce body fluid, so it can quench thirst and moisten dryness. It is slightly bitter and can reduce internal heat, while sweetness does not hurt the stomach. Ancient people only said that it is bitter and cold, but they did not observe it deeply.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: Trichosanthes root can relieve the stagnation of heat in the five internal organs, such as dry tongue and dry mouth caused by excessive heart fire, swollen throat and sore throat caused by excessive lung fire, swollen mouth, tongue and teeth caused by excessive spleen fire, and restless cough caused by excessive phlegm fire. If the liver fire causes swelling and flow of the ribs, the kidney fire causes bone steaming and fever, or the carbuncle has ulcerated but not ulcerated, but the heat toxicity does not dissipate, or the five jaundices cause yellow body and eyes, and the urine is stifling and astringent, all of which are caused by stagnation of fire and heat. Only this medicine can relieve the stagnation, reduce phlegm and fire, and can cure it. In addition, it is sweet and cold in nature, and is good at curing thirst. It can cure deficiency thirst from tonic medicine, cure thirst from fire from cooling medicine, cure stagnation thirst from qi medicine, and cure thirst from blood medicine. It is an essential medicine for curing thirst.

"Ben Jing Feng Yuan" says: Trichosanthes root can reduce the heat and phlegm on the diaphragm, moisten the heart and relieve thirst, eliminate seasonal diseases and fever, eliminate alcohol and dampness, treat carbuncle, detoxify and discharge pus. "Ben Jing" is known as "tonifying deficiency, calming the middle and restoring the broken injury" because it has the function of clearing the stomach and removing heat. When the fire is gone, the middle qi is at peace, and when the body fluid is restored, the blood and qi are harmonious and the broken injury is restored. It is cold in nature and can be used for vomiting due to stomach deficiency, yin deficiency and cough due to fatigue, which will damage the stomach qi. After a long time, diarrhea, wheezing and coughing will occur, and the root of the disease will become more solid.

"Compared with Trichosanthes kirilowii, Trichosanthes kirilowii is slightly milder in nature, not as urgent as Trichosanthes kirilowii, but has the effect of pushing down walls and knocking down walls. As for the "Classic", it says that it can calm the middle and continue to be exhausted, which seems to be not the correct statement, but it means that it can eliminate heat and calm oneself.

"Continuation of Yao Zheng" says: There are two symptoms of thirst. The one caused by excessive thirst is Gypsum, while the one caused by thirst is Trichosanthes root.

"Medical Records of Combining Chinese and Western Medicine": Radix Trichosanthis, because it can produce fluid and quench thirst, it can moisten the lungs, transform dry phlegm in the lungs, calm the lungs and stop coughs, treat lung disease and tuberculosis, and is also good at unblocking the meridians, and relieving all heat and toxins in sores. For the initial stage of carbuncle, it can be eliminated by using it together with Fructus Forsythiae and Scabra Paniculata; for sores that have already ulcerated, it can be used together with Radix Astragali and Licorice (all must be used raw), which can further promote the growth of flesh and discharge pus. Even if the ulcer is very deep and has spread to other parts of the body, and it is impossible to apply medicine, it can also grow flesh from the inside and slowly discharge the pus.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
