"Ben Cao Jing Shu" states: "The spleen and stomach qi like warmth and hate cold. If it is cold, the qi in the middle cannot be transported and transformed, or it may be cold and solid, or it may be abdominal colic, or cold phlegm stagnation, resulting in qi reversal and cough, and the five internal organs are not in good condition. Evodia rutaecarpa, pungent and warm, warms the spleen and stomach and disperses the cold evil, so the middle is warm and the qi is downward, and all symptoms are eliminated. It is mainly used to remove dampness and blood stasis, and expel wind evil, because the wind, cold and dampness evil often enters from the spleen and stomach. The spleen and stomach govern the muscles. If they are invaded by evil, the pores are closed, and cold and heat stasis come from here. Pungent and warm, it disperses and opens, so it can make the wind, cold and dampness evil come out from the pores. Abdominal pain caused by evil qi invading the spleen and stomach, and entering the spleen to disperse the evil, the abdominal pain will stop.

"Compendium of Materia Medica": Cornus officinalis is pungent and hot, which can disperse and warm, and bitter and hot, which can dry and firm. Therefore, the symptoms it treats are all based on its ability to disperse cold, warm the middle, dry dampness and relieve depression. For sores in the throat, mouth and tongue, mix cornus officinalis powder with vinegar and apply it to the soles of both feet. It will heal overnight. Although it is hot in nature, it can lead heat downward, which is also in line with the meaning of treatment. It seems that it is not true that the nature of cornus officinalis can move upward but not downward. Some people treat children with lockjaw by chewing one or two cornus officinalis seeds and applying them to the sores, which can open the mouth. It is also based on its pungent and dispersing properties.

Ben Jing Feng Yuan states: Cornus officinalis is good at ascending, so those who take Cornus officinalis may suffer from diaphragmatic and eye problems, hair loss and sore throat, and sores caused by fire. In treating symptoms of sudden diarrhea, vomiting, acid regurgitation, and liver and spleen fire reversal, bitter and cold herbs must be used to descend the symptoms. For example, Zuo Jin Wan is the most effective in treating liver fire and phlegm.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" says: Evodia rutaecarpa is a medicine that can relieve depression, dissipate stagnation, expel cold and lower qi. Fang Longtan said that all diseases of cold in the lower abdomen and lower abdomen, or vomiting, nausea and vomiting acid, or phlegm accumulation and blocking food and qi, or cold stagnation in the spleen and stomach and diarrhea, or stagnation of liver and spleen and distension and food reversal, or hernia, mass and string qi attacking the lower abdomen, or beriberi attacking the heart and vomiting and sour and bitter, are all symptoms of the liver, spleen and kidney meridians, and Evodia rutaecarpa can cure them.

"Ben Cao Bian Du" says: Evodia rutaecarpa is bitter and warm, fragrant and dry. It is originally the main medicine for the liver, but it also enters the spleen and stomach because the spleen likes fragrance and dryness, and the stomach likes to descend. It has the fastest nature of descending qi and can disperse depression. Therefore, it can treat liver qi stagnation, cold turbidity, abdominal pain, hernia and other diseases, or pathogenic factors that go down to the extreme and rise, which is vomiting, acid swallowing, chest fullness and other diseases. Its bitter, fragrant and dry nature can generally be imagined. It is suitable for treating liver and stomach, as well as cold and dampness stagnation in the middle and lower parts of the body.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
