【Predecessors release medicine】

Tao Hongjing: Nowadays, many people suffer from red eyes when taking Salvia miltiorrhiza, so it should be hot in nature. Now it is said that it is slightly cold, which may be wrong.

"Compendium of Materia Medica": Danshen, according to "The Theory of Women", Siwu Decoction can treat women's diseases regardless of whether it is before or after childbirth or how much menstrual flow, except for Danshen Powder, which has the same main treatment as it. Danshen can break up old blood, replenish new blood, stabilize the fetus, abort the dead fetus, stop metrorrhagia and stagnation, and regulate the menstruation. Its function is similar to that of Angelica, Rehmannia, Chuanxiong, and Paeonia.

"Ben Cao Jing Shu": Danshen, "Ben Jing" tastes bitter and slightly cold; Tao Yun is hot and non-toxic. It is used to treat evil qi in the heart and abdomen, rumbling in the intestines like running water, cold and heat accumulation, breaking up symptoms and removing masses, so it is like a cold medicine; it stops irritability and fullness, replenishes qi, and "Bie Lu" nourishes blood, removes chronic diseases and qi accumulation in the heart and abdomen, stiffens the waist and spine, and numbness in the feet, removes wind evil and retained heat, and is beneficial to people after long-term use, and is definitely not a hot medicine; it should be bitter, flat and slightly warm. Enter the hand, foot Shaoyin, and foot Jueyin meridians. If the heart is weak, evil qi will invade it, causing irritability and fullness, which will become a chronic disease after a long time; if the liver is weak, heat will be generated, and the liver's qi and blood will stagnate, which will cause symptoms and masses, cold and heat accumulation; if the kidney is weak and cold and damp evil invades it, the waist and spine will be stiff, and the feet will be numb; if it enters the three meridians and removes the bitterness, then the above symptoms will be eliminated. Bitterness can relieve, and warmth can disperse, so it is also used to treat rumbling in the intestines like running water. Long-term use is beneficial to people, replenishing qi, and nourishing blood. Those produced in the north win.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states: Danshen is good at treating blood, removing stagnation and generating new blood, regulating menstruation and smoothing the meridians. It is used to treat symptoms of vomiting, epistaxis, stranguria, and metrorrhagia in men and women, or disharmony between Chong and Ren meridians and poor fetal movement, or disorder of blood chamber after childbirth, or stagnation of blood and pain in all joints, or amenorrhea and lower abdominal pain, or stagnation of liver and spleen and irregular cold and heat, or accumulation of symptoms and masses and distension and stuffiness, or hernia and irregularity, or paralysis of the feet and knees and heavy pain and difficulty in walking, or retention of qi in the heart and abdomen and intestinal rumbling, or blood vessels and red pain in the eyes. Therefore, "Ming Theory" uses Danshen as one thing, but it has the function of four things. It can replenish blood and generate blood, and its merits are better than those of Radix Rehmanniae and Radix Rehmanniae, regulate blood and restrain blood, its strength is comparable to that of Radix Paeoniae Rubra, it can remove stasis and generate new blood, and its nature is twice as hard as that of Rhizoma Chuanxiong. It can be often used to treat all kinds of women's diseases, whether before or after pregnancy.

"Ben Jing Feng Yuan": Danshen "Ben Jing" treats evil qi in the heart and abdomen, rumbling in the intestines like running water and other diseases, all of which are signs of blood stasis and transformation into water. It can stop irritability and replenish qi, and the stagnation will be gone and the irritability will be cured, and the positive qi will be restored.

"Compendium of Materia Medica" states that Danshen can enter the pericardium and dissolve blood stasis, which is the full effect of Danshen. However, there are also discussions that it can promote new birth and stabilize pregnancy, regulate menstruation and relieve restlessness, nourish the mind and stabilize the spirit, and all wind arthralgia, metrorrhagia, abdominal masses, red eyes, hernia pain, sores, scabies, swelling and pain, etc., all of which are due to its blood stasis removal, so it can be seen that all diseases can be cured, but it is not true that it can promote new birth and stabilize pregnancy, nourish the mind and stabilize the spirit.

"Chongqingtang Essays": Danshen descends and circulates blood, and is suitable for those with hot and stagnant blood, so it is an important medicine for regulating menstruation and postpartum. If menstruation is early or there is no blood, and menstruation is stopped, and there is too little blood to nourish the fetus and the fetus is not at peace, and if the blood is flowing smoothly after childbirth, all should not be confused by the theory that it has the same effect as the four ingredients, and abuse it because it contains ginseng. Even if it has the same effect as the four ingredients, the Siwu Decoction is originally a medicine for treating blood diseases, not a blood-tonifying prescription, and Mr. Shi Wan has already distinguished this. As for the theory of tonifying the heart, it is not like wolfberry and longan, which can really tonify the deficiency of the heart. The heart stores the spirit and controls the blood. If the heart fire is too active, the spirit will be restless. Danshen clears the fire in the blood, so it can calm the spirit and stabilize the mind; if the mind is at peace, the heart will benefit. It is used for all warm and hot evils that are transmitted to the nutrient division, and this is also the meaning. If the evil is in the qi division and is used incorrectly, it will lead the evil into the nutrient division, so you must be careful.

"Bencao Zhengyi": Salvia miltiorrhiza is called slightly cold in "Ben Jing". Tao Hongjing suspected it was wrong, and Miao Zhongchun also doubted it. It was not until Zhang Shiwan that it was changed to slightly warm.

Precautions for making Chinese herbal medicine:

    1. The medicine jar must be cleaned

When decocting Chinese medicine, the medicinal juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicinal scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the decocted medicine in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicinal scale is not wiped off in time, the medicinal scale will dissolve when the new medicine is decocted, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the treatment of the disease. Especially if highly toxic medicines or external medicines that cannot be eaten have been decocted before, it may cause poisoning.

In addition, if the Chinese medicine is not cleaned immediately after each decoction, the scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will become thicker and thicker, and it will easily burn when the medicine is re-decocted, thus losing its efficacy.

    2. Whether to cover the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. This is especially true for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, and perilla leaves, and they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. For some expensive medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, and wolfberry, the active ingredients should be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in size, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White tongcao, Loofah, Corn hair, etc., so they should not be decocted with the lid on, otherwise they will often overflow from the pot. You can decoct with the lid on and stir at any time.

    3. Fry thoroughly and squeeze dry

"Decoction thoroughly" means that the active ingredients of the medicine are fully released, which is the basic requirement for decoction. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decoction separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc. can the medicine juice be thickened and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
