It should be used less rather than more, and can treat real heat but not virtual heat. Virtual fire should be supplemented, while real fire should be purged. Using coptis chinensis to purge fire is a positive treatment, and using cinnamon to treat fire is a secondary treatment. Therefore, coptis chinensis and cinnamon are opposite in cold and heat, and it seems that they cannot be used together, but there are actually people who can use them together successfully. Coptis chinensis enters the heart, and cinnamon enters the kidney. During the day and night, ordinary people must have both heart and kidney, and then water and fire can be balanced. When water and fire are separated, the heart and kidney will not communicate. Only Coptis chinensis can dry out dampness with bitterness and remove heat with coldness, killing two birds with one stone. Nothing is more magical than this. The heart belongs to fire, and coldness overcomes fire. Therefore, Coptis chinensis should be a medicine for purging the heart, but why can it nourish the heart? Bitterness is the true taste of fire, and it is used to nourish it. If there is evil fire in the heart, this can also muddy it, and the true fire can be calmed. Therefore, purging is also the way to nourish it."
 "Ben Jing Shu Zheng" states: "For patients with typhoid fever who have heat in the chest, evil qi in the stomach, abdominal pain, and vomiting, Huanglian Tang is the main treatment. For patients with Shaoyin disease who have been ill for more than two or three days, who are restless and unable to sleep, Huanglian A Wen Tang is the main treatment. Both prescriptions use Huanglian as the main ingredient, and both symptoms originate from the heart, which shows that Huanglian is a remedy for purging heart fire."

All symptoms that require Coptis chinensis are generally caused by dampness and heat, and rely on it as a bitter and dry agent to purge and descend. It is not only good at clearing heat, but also cannot be used for anyone who does not have a thick yellow tongue coating and is covered with greasy and turbid fluid. For example, sores and ulcers are almost regarded as a universal medicine for yang symptoms; in fact, only furunculosis is caused by real fire, and Coptis chinensis is the most needed medicine. Other symptoms are often used when dampness and heat are combined.
