"Compendium of Materia Medica": According to the "Leigong Paozhi Lun·Preface", it is said that to benefit food, you must boil reed bark. The note says that you should use reed root and magnolia bark in equal parts, boil them in water and drink the decoction. This is because the sweetness of reed root can benefit the stomach, and the coldness can reduce fire.

"Ben Cao Jing Shu" says: Reed root tastes sweet and cold and is non-toxic. For those who suffer from diabetes, there is heat in the middle jiao, which causes the spleen and stomach to dry up and the body fluids to not be produced. Sweetness can benefit the stomach and harmonize the middle, and coldness can remove heat and reduce fire. When the heat is relieved and the stomach is in harmony, the body fluids can flow and the thirst can be stopped. Guest heat is pathogenic heat. Sweetness and coldness can remove pathogenic heat, and the guest heat can be relieved. The lung is the upper source of water. The spleen disperses essence and returns to the lungs, which can regulate the water channel and transport it to the bladder. The kidney is the water organ and controls the two bowel movements. If there is heat in the three organs, the urination will be frequent, and even unable to hold it back. This is because the fire is rapid. When the heat in the lungs, kidneys, and spleen is relieved, the urination will return to its normal course. Fire rises and the stomach heats up, which causes nausea, vomiting, inability to eat, and choking and hiccups. Typhoid fever is a disease, and the heat is severe, which makes people feel depressed. If the yin is lost, people with diarrhea will feel thirsty. Pregnant women with insufficient blood will have heart heat. Sweetness and coldness can remove heat and calm the stomach, and can also reduce qi, so it is the main treatment.

"Medical Records of Chinese and Western Medicine": "Qianjin" Weijing Decoction, the commentator said that the reason why the stem of reed is used instead of the root is that the lung origin is in the upper part, and the root of the reed is close to the upper part. But I think it is not so. The root of reed is at the bottom of the water, and its nature is cool and good at ascending. For those suffering from big head plague, I often use it as a key medicine for guiding the meridians. Its ascending power can reach the brain, let alone the lungs? Moreover, its cool nature can clear the lung heat, and its hollowness can regulate the lung qi. It is sweet and has a lot of liquid, which is better at nourishing the lung yin. Therefore, it is clear that the root is better than the stem. What is sold in pharmacies now is called reed root, which is actually reed root. Its nature is quite similar to Imperata root. If Imperata root is not available, fresh reed root can be used instead.
